Why is it difficult for Iraq to form a Democratic government?

jfvolleygirl27 asked:

The United States went from a Unitary government (while still a colony of England), to a Confederate (under the Articles of Confederation), and then finally into a Federal/Democracy.

The US wants Iraq to hold a Democratic government as well. What is it about Iraq that makes this difficult?

This is a question held in my Civics class. I get that the country is unstable right now….but are there any other reasons why it is so hard for Iraq to form a Democratic gov?

Because they are completely destabilized at this point

It’s due to the long standing divisions between the Sunni and Shi’a fractions of Islam. For a thousand years they have been fighting over who is the rightful heir to Mohammad. Plus you ad in the Kurds and none of the people in Iraq have gotten along with each other for centuries.

Religious fanaticism. It’s like the clash between fundamentalist right wingers in the US and the more liberal Americans who don’t buy into their mindset.
But taken way to a violent extreme.

Roll on floor laughing….”The US wants Iraq to hold a Democratic government as well” Have you ever wondered what the people of Iraq want?……let me think about this……China and Russia want the US to hold a Communist government so they come into our country, remove our military defense, destroy our infrastructure, remove and kill our government leaders (no matter how bad they are), murder thousands of civilians, and occupy our country for countless years…. how would you react.

Your question implies that our government evolved overnight without bloodshed. It is an over simplistic view of our history.

The oil wealth of Iraq is great. Powerful people are compelled to control the oil and thereby control the wealth. They do not see a need to share.

Too many people have ideas on how the country should be. Some want an Islamic state like Afghanistan was. Some want it back to how it was when Sadam was in power. Then there is those that want Iraq to be a democracy. The problem with the middle east is they don’t seperate church and state. No one religion should ever hold power in a country. Humanity is ignorant and will kill their brother over their spiritual beliefs. At least that is my view on the middle east. Religion should be kept were it belongs. Until they can agree the fighting will always be there.
