What kind of cell phone would work in Iraq due to deployment?
Giovanna asked:
I hear that quadband phones should work. I have a quadband phone from AT&T. I am aware that prices will be higher, though. If I get an international roaming plan with that phone should that work out? Or could I atleast use a sim-card from Iraq? Please respond with helpful information.

Tri-band phones work as well. A little cheaper. Make sure you also have a 220v charger since that’s all that’s available in some places. (Other places are 110 so be careful.)
IF you don’t get your phone before you leave, don’t worry. There are plenty of phones available in country and may be cheaper than those here.
The cheapest route to go is VOIP, either Packet8 or Vonage work quite well and it’ll be a US phone number. (Have it shipped to your home address.) You’ll have unlimited calling time to any US or Canadian phone #. You want a domestic plan, not a international plan.
The next cheapest route (other than the military phone) is IRAQNA(local cell service). It costs about 35 cents a minute whether it’s a local call or to the US.
Oh yeah, you’ll need an unlock code to use any American bought phone with any service other than the one you bought it from. The rest of the world doesn’t do the codes.
I can’t remember which US cell services work there but it seems my buddy used his T-Mobile. It’s (American cell) definitely more expensive than the local service.
Yes, SatPhones work there. (There are places they don’t) But they are expensive.
And Karen, almost everyone there has a cellphone.
Giovanna, Let me say thank you for volunteering. Good Luck in Basic. You’ll have fun there, if you let yourself, if you can learn to laugh at yourself and if you can see through the ‘games.’
Wait until you get to Iraq and buy a local cell-phone.
The cell phone company is called Iraqna.
Its fairly cheap and I found it was pretty reliable.
are you kidding. I mean you are kidding right. You cannot take a cell phone to Iraq or use a cell phone in Iraq, do you have any idea how much danger is involved in that!??!
Good question. I thought only satellite phones worked. My husband wanted to buy one but they are crazy expensive.
i think you have to be in Iraq first and get local one.you can get the service from Iraquna,or Etasalat,or Orascome telecoms
and i think the last one is more better for you
