How often do National Guard get deployed off soil, in conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan?

Gen_Rike asked:

I am 18 considering joining the National Guard for College benefits and i have heard they see the least amount of combat. But i also hear they were deployed somewhat to Iraq and Afghanistan. Can someone please help me?

Since Viet Nam, the National Guard has been considered an actual military unit, and deployment to foreign soil is considered part of the training and duty. So, I would be asking the recruiter a lot of questions. But to avoid combat, don’t sign up. It’s that simple.

Any time the United States is involved in a conflict overseas, you may be deployed.

If you enlist they have an 8 year window into your life. You could get deployed at anytime after basic training. Also during the aftermath of a natural disaster. A tour of duty is usually 6 months but could last as long as needed.

National Guard units get deployed on the same rotation as RA units of the same type AND individual NG members get called-upon for “back-fill” in short-handed units that are being deployed.
MOST combat-units ARE NG. The biggest difference is that in the NG you need a job between deployments.

You don’t join the military for the benefits. They’re a BONUS for what you would have done anyway. Otherwise it’s RETARDED to sign-up.
