How much US oil came from Iraq before the start of the Iraq War?
Alkaid48 asked:
I’m writing an essay on the Iraq War for school, and I wanted to know how much oil we were getting from Iraq prior to our invasion in 2003. If you also have information on how much we get from them today, that would also be appreciated, but I assume that information would be easier to locate, so my primary focus is on the number before the war. Any method of defining it would be fine (a percentage, number, etc.) If you could also cite your source, that would be fantastic.

Not much.
Think about TRANSPORTATION. Oil costs money but moving it around costs money too. Why would the USA pay shipping costs from Iraq when we can get oil from closer sources?
Consider..
We pump oil out of the North Shore of Alaska and pump it down to a port near Anchorage. Then we ship it to Japan. Why? Japan is the closest market so shipping costs are the least taking it there.
Mexico and Canada pump oil. Where do they ship it? The USA. Why? Closest market so shipping costs are the least. It would be silly for them to ship it to Japan because price wise they could not compete with North Shore oil.
Middle East oil. They pump it and where do they ship it? All the way to the USA? Why when shipping costs would make it more expensive than Canadian and Mexican oil. No, instead they ship it to Europe.
Far East oil? Goes to China, Australia, etc. Again because it is cheaper to ship to closer places that need it.
It is a global market and you must consider shipping costs. By that logic alone, it would be dumb for the USA to go with Iraq oil when there are other sources so much closer.
Looks like we import a little less now than in 2000-2001
In 2003 it was 171 million barrels – about 5% of total imports
Thats easy,
before the invasion, we got no oil from iraq.
Right now, we get no oil from iraq.
