Are American troops in Iraq still protecting their homecountry?
Mr Innocent asked:
I can still hear Americans claim that their troops in Iraq are still protecting America, which sounds odd in my ears. Isn’t the war in Iraq already won by the Americans?

its interesting because our troops are fighting to keep on fighting.
the rebels and iraqi militia fighting against our troops want America to remove its soldiers but America is fighting against them
the war was won in 2003 it’s that silly peace and rebuilding part that we’re dealing with still.
No , its not a war its an occupation , so it will never end (or be won) . Troops are protecting American interests , not America .
No. Actually I’m not really sure why they are there now or why they went there in the first place- what a tragedy. Let’s agree on the prosecution of Bush. That would suffice, to my estimation, in preventing the likelihood of another meaningless war. In a just society I don’t see how one could rule otherwise.
They never were.
Usa needs oil and its got lots of interests being there to be closer to iran, pakistan and other enemy country
Are they or aren’t they fighting elsewhere, and not here?
Rhetorical me, but that is your answer.
No, they aren’t. I refuse to believe that has anything to do with our security, it was a huge mistake
YES AND IT’S NOT A WAR NO ONE DECLARED WAR ON IRAQ IT’S A WAR ON TERRORISM YOU DUMB F*CK!
Yes, they are. While the combat has decreased dramatically, it is equally important to show Iraqi’s that the USA is NOT the bad guy. That protection is one that will not manifest itself in our lifetime, but in the future generations.
Today, in the coffee shop I work in, I waited on a soldier who is going back to Iraq next month. When he tells me of the joy he sees on the children’s faces that wasn’t there even two years ago, I know they are still protecting our great country. Also, never underestimate the use of soccer diplomacy, as he says a ten dollar soccer ball can make the difference between friendship and enmity with the next generation of Iraqi’s.
Well this is just what i think an opinion only… the soldiers do what they are told they have no choice, but i assume you are asking why government hasn’t pulled them out yet, i think that if we were to get out now it would take about a year and they would be back to their old selves again trying to take everything over, but i guess when they finally do take them out we will see none of us know exactly what will happen, but i suggest we pray for the best…
If we leave Iraq they will come attack us. Busch scared the living **** out of those Iraqis and now Obama isn’t gonna scare anybody.
He’s going to go move in with those Muslims.
We needed a republican in the White House. Can you say Obamanation??
Don’t take away pride in our troops.. please.. this is not for you but for others.. It’s difficult and painful.. Like youw ouldnt believe to have someone in the military be away.. Painfully hard.. So, if you have to.. please, keep your that pride and honor they deserve well.. Till you are in their places..Regardless of reasons why they are there.. we always gotta be there for them..
They’re still there protecting American “honour,” after Bush, “Dick” Cheney and Rumsfeld bungled the whole thing.
I firmly believe that even if 9/11 had never happened, there would still be American troops in Iraq, and the war would still have been bungled.
They were never there to protect the US of A. They were sent to make George and “Dick” and their buddies rich.
The war is won and the troops remain there to insure the stability of the country. WWII was won and we still have troops in Germany and Japan. We still have troops in South Korea. Why should Iraq be any different, unless you have an agenda where you would like to see the current Iraqi government fail and revert to being a terrorist state.
iraq never was a threat to america. george bush was in a drunk stuper at the time he ordered our troops to iraq. and they have been foghting and dying for george bush.i hope obama sticks to his promise and brings our troops home never to return to the middle east again.
The troops in Iraq are protecting America.
I know it sounds odd, because the logic behind engagement is a little weird to most people.
Engagement is not something you can liken to a house hold every day situation. Who would go and fight drug dealers to keep their children safe from drugs?
Most likely no one, but that is actually what Police are doing when they make a drug bust. They are keeping their children (and other children in the community) safe from drugs.
In a similar way, by having removed a terrorist supporting government in Iraq we have protected the world from possible terrorism. Problem being though that at the same time we have increased terrorism by creating instability and offending/angering a lot of people.
if the war is won, how come people are still dying…………………?////////
Yes, you are right, and it is the time for them to leave, instead of losing more soldiers.
It is better for them to escape with the face’s water. becuase the picture is clear right now.
INDIRECTLY…. We removed the direct threat to America with the capture of Hussein….. we remain in Iraq because we can not leave a power vacuum that could be exploited by Iran….. If we were to allow Iran or some other anti-west / anti-Israel faction to control Iraq…..another bigger Middle East war would probably occur….. we might be forced to return to the Middle East and fight along side Israel…. fight in what might become a nuclear war…. this new war would cost even more American lives…..so INDIRECTLY we are still protecting America
DUDE….”Iraq was never a threat to America”
Let’s see…. A little old man with bad kidneys, in a small camp in the middle of the Afghan wilderness, killed 3,000 Americans…… BUT a ruler of an entire country with over 9 billion dollars at his disposal…. who sent funds to Ben Laden…..who declared war on America…. who attempted to assassinate a sitting American President….who paid ******* bombers $25,000 to kill Americans….. who tried three times to shoot down American aircraft …..who flagrantly violated the UN Peace Accords…. who had no compunction to slaughter his own people….. was somehow not a threat to America…. You believe in the Easter Bunny too dont you
BTW…. No matter what the liberal media says….no matter what the Democrats say…..no matter what President Bush said….. THERE WERE WMDs in Iraq….We found plenty…. some were even used against us in IEDs…..indications are there were many more moved to the Bakka Valley in Syria…. according to the latest intelligence Syria is moving it to North Africa…. They have found WMDs in a Norway scrapyard with Iraqi markings….. you need to do research and not rely on the liberal media…..
RAFI…. Explain to us exactly how America gets oil out of this war…..The Iraqi oil fields are controlled by the UN…..all profits from the oil goes to the Iraqi people…..we get no Iraqi oil ….. in fact Bush and his cronies would have made more “oil money” if they had NOT saved the Iraqi oil industry which by the way is pumping more oil that it ever has in history…..more oil on the market means less cost to the consumer…..means Bush’s cronies make less money – NOT more
PATCH…. The American military works very hard NOT to make a mess…..there are staff officers at every level who’s sole job is to protect the infrastructure / civilians…..we have entire units whose mission is to protect / repair civilian facilities….. we have done everything from giving 96% of all Iraqi children under 5 their polio shots…. we have helped ( with the aid of Texas A&M) Iraqi farmers increase production to historic levels ; they now export produce……we built schools, medical clinics, water and power facilities…..we created 3 Academies that produce 5,000 security officers every 8 weeks…. Your analysis is based on the bias and limited information of the liberal media….
Yes and No. Yes they are still protecting our homeland because they are insuring no retaliation from the Iraqi people and that they don’t go back to the corrupt ways of Saddam, as well as being closer to other foreign countries such as Iran in case. And no because they are cleaning up the mess that the war left. Think of it this way if someone came to your house tore it apart wouldn’t you want them to stick around and put it back together? And it was a “operation” not war.
When we ousted Saddam and defeated his military in 2003, that was only the initial phase. I believe many in the administration (politicians that we chose to elect, Democrats and Republicans both) failed to provide a clear vision to our military and the people of the United States.
Since then, we have been in a ‘reconstruction’ phase. It was rough between 2004 and through 2005. There was a great deal of violence during that time period, much of which can be blaimed on foreign insurgents who have fanatical beliefs. They struck fear in the Iraqi population, so much so that many Iraqis were afraid to help or support the Allied Forces in fear of being killed by these insurgents. Granted, the Abu Ghraib scandal and civilian casualties (unfortunate part of any conflict) did not bode well for the U.S. but these events were overkilled by the media while other developments that are much more significant were overlooked such as schools/roads/hospitals/police stations being built, water and electricity being provided, the al-Anbar Province (a very popular terrorist hideout) being handed over to 100% Iraqi control.
Much of these positive developments have come along since General David Petraeus took command in 2007. He has provided a clear vision and endstate that our civilian politicians failed to do in the past seven or so years. Victory is not going to be an American flag being raised over Baghdad. It is going to be a democratic Iraqi government finally being able to stand on its two feet and manage its own security, economy, foreign policy, etc.

yes we already won the war. but we are in iraq to liberate the iraqi people, so they can have a better life.
