What was the reason of the US invading Iraq in the first place again?

cinnamonm.late asked:

The war has been going on for so long and I was a little kid when I guess it started so I never even knew and my parents didn’t even tell me. So how did the war start between the Us and Iraq?

And that was as good a reason as any other one they gave because it was all BS.

    yeah.

wjen 911 happened you know when the twin towers got blew up

  5. FrinkZoe says:

The Bush administration (”W”) was convinced that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. They were weary of the games being played by Saddam with the weapons inspectors and were impatient waiting for economic sanctions to have an effect.

  6. nemeczek says:

Iraq was weak militarily and it was an oil-rich country. Here we go. Alleged WMDs were just an excuse to go in.

  7. pistol girl says:

Well, the twin towers were bombed and we sent troops to try to deal with the terrorists that were responsible as a measure to protect our country from any other possible attacks.

It depends on who you ask:

Colin Powell told the UN security council that S. Hussein had WMD’s and that he presented a threat to the region/world

Michael Moore says that the US wanted to take over oil production and resources in the Middle East and give business to shady corporate interests.

G.W Bush says they tried to kill his dad.

I am thinking it was because the Plane Jacking on 9/11 which destroyed 2 buildings and killed hundreds of people.

  10. Lynne L says:

It started because **** Cheney and George Bush said Sadaam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Which of course, surprise, surprise….they didnt!

Your short memory simply needs to read Yahoo Answers every other day for this answer since it get asked every other day.

Saddam broke UN resolutions 18 times and was warned. Bush had the guts to do something about it.

Millions of dollars worth of loose change dropped in the sand!

  13. NutstersChick says:

if breaking UN resolutions were the reasons behind the US invasion of iraq, why don’t they invade israel & put them straight too?
To date israel has broken hundreds & are still breaking them, almost daily.
No-one steps in to protect Palestinians, do they?

    Iraq was over Oil.
The WMDs, the connection between iraq & 9/11 or saddams treatment of his people were a convenient ruse.
One that’s suited the likes of halliburton & others who stand to gain from the re-building of a country, that they knocked down.

Well, for one thing, the war didn’t start between the USA and Iraq, the USA simply attacked and invaded Iraq, a country that had never attacked the USA, never threatened to attack the USA, and had no means with which to attack the USA. This was entirely a war of choice on the USA’s part, though you will still hear some people bleating the propaganda that somehow they “made us” attack them.

The reason given for the invasion, that Iraq was working on magical weapons that would allow them to kill millions of Americans, didn’t pass the laugh test, so even if millions of Americans bought that hogswallow, it’s almost inconceivable that the USA government seriously believed Iraq was a threat.

So what was the real reason? Probably several things, the primary one being that the Bush administration was hoping to reshape the Middle East more to it’s liking, that was certainly a stated goal on many occaisions. The idea being that it would be easy to install a compliant western oriented government because the Iraqis would be so grateful for removing Saddam, and that government would act as a catalyst and other regimes we don’t like in the region would be easily toppled. Granted it’s a plan almost breathtaking in it’s optimism and unrealistic goals, but there you have it.

A desire to give American oil companies unfettered access to Iraq’s oil fields certainly was part of the equation, and possibly a desire on Bush’s part to finish the job his father started. Bush also said once that God told him to invade Iraq, we can only hope that wasn’t rally the case.

Probably the best simple explanation is that Bush and company thought it was a great idea at the time, and refused to listen to anyone who pointed out the rather large flaws in the plan. Group think basically, the same way the Bay of Pigs, another amazingly stupid plan got approved and carried out by the USA government.

wasn’t it something about blood diamonds

  17. kazimandias says:

Officially, it was because Saddam Hussein caused 9-11, and had weapons of mass destruction.

In reality, of course, Hussein was a mortal enemy of Al Qaeda, and if he’d had WMD then Bush would have kissed his toes the way Bush did the instant North Korea (also on the enemies list up to that moment) announced they had nuclear weapons.

In reality, it’s one or more of three reasons:

    1) Bush’s dad was seen as having botched Iraq, by not removing Hussein from power. That he did not do so because it would have caused endless quagmire and regional instability escaped W…he wanted to fix his dad’s mistake, a-la Oedipus.

    2) The war in Iraq was guaranteed to make the price of oil go through the roof. Indeed, it more than doubled it. Bush’s career has been funded by Texan and Saudi families that are making literally trillions from his insane foreign policy.

    3) Bush is supposedly a fundamentalist Christian of the type who believe that you can FORCE Jesus to come again, by fulfilling all of the prophecies they errantly imagine to be in the Bible, even though theologians long say trying to tell the future with the Bible is a sin. Unfortunately, almost ALL of the prophecies are those of evil dominating the planet…like massive war in the Middle East.
